Home Theater PC I decided that I would build a home theater PC that I could download all of my shows on and use as a Blu-ray player as well. So off to the local computer store to get all the bits.
It runs Ubuntu 9.04 and Boxee. Still having some difficulties. Not getting any sound out of the TV. Trying with JUST the HDMI cable. I prefer not having to use an extra cable (for example the optical cable). The screen image is larger than the TV, so I don't get to see the menus on the TV. It is rather frustrating. There are a couple of things that I'm going to try that will hopefully fix both of those issues. Here's some pictures of the assembly!
Update - May 9, 2009. There were three primary problems. 1) The system would "forget" that it had the BD-Rom drive. It would disappear from the bios. 2) There was no sound from the HDMI port. 3) The video image being too large. So, I decided to try Windows. My friend Mike talked me into trying Windows 7. I must say, after one night of playing around, I'm somewhat impressed. It's WAY better than Vista (what a mistake that was). The sound and video are fixed. I didn't run into the BD-Rom problem at all last night, but I can't see how that could be O/S related so I will have to watch it. Next, I will install Boxee for windows and see how it all works. Update - May 10, 2009. I returned the Sony BD-Rom drive, and purchased an LG BD-Rom drive. Boxee for windows doesn't seem to work so well. Going to keep working on that. I did buy a BluRay DVD to test out the quality. Update - June 17, 2009. I returned the remote control. As it turns out, the remote will only control certain programs. I bought a remote keyboard and air mouse. The air mouse is really good and very accurate. It was a good decision. I still haven't used it much for TV programs and I haven't been able to find a recording program something like Myth TV. Myth TV is currently only available for Linux. Anyhow, right now I have a very expensive Blu-Ray player, but it has much potential. |
